Let’s dive into something crucial for building your course: understanding your ideal student. You know, I’ve worked with hundreds of teachers and entrepreneurs, and one thing that always comes up is how to really figure out who your audience is. And let me tell you, when I started, it felt impossible... like everyone was just guessing. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to have it all figured out right away. Even now, after years in business, I’m still learning more about my audience every day.
In this lesson, we’ll cover four practical ways to understand who your ideal students are, and how you can use that knowledge to create content that speaks directly to them. Think of it like dating... you might have a list of who your “ideal” person is, but the more you interact with real people, the more you learn what works. It’s the same with your business. You’ll gain more clarity as you go!
Conversations are Key: Talk to your audience as much as possible. Real-life conversations are the best way to learn what your students want and need. Keep notes on their pain points, challenges, and goals.
Observe & Listen: Be a detective! Check out Facebook groups, Instagram comments, or anywhere your ideal students hang out. People often reveal their struggles and desires when they’re just chatting online.
Survey & Collect Feedback: Though not perfect, surveys can give you useful insights. Don’t rely on this alone, but use it to gather ideas.
Show Up & Share: Start sharing content! Your ideal students will find you and resonate with what you share. Pay attention to the engagement and questions you get—it’s a goldmine of information.
Have a Conversation: If you can, talk to 1-2 people this week who fit your target audience. Ask them about their challenges, what they love, and how they see their own growth.
Join Facebook Groups: Jump into teacher groups or any online community where your ideal students hang out. Start observing the kinds of questions they ask or issues they talk about.
Start Sharing: Post something this week related to what you’re passionate about, even if it’s not perfect. The engagement you get will help you narrow down your focus.
Keep going! This is where you start really connecting with your future students. Remember, it’s okay if it feels unclear at first... that clarity will come as you keep learning and refining. You’re on the right path!
